Philharmonia
Jeff Edmons, Artistic Director:
A
pre-professional symphony orchestra comprised of the most
experienced musicians in the San Diego Youth Symphony program.
This orchestra, open to musicians aged 15-25 or who have
reached the tenth grade, or as instrumentation requires.
The orchestra rehearses and performs advanced orchestral
literature in a professional setting. Domestic and foreign
concert tours may be an additional educational component
of this top-level ensemble. The Philharmonia rehearses on
Saturdays from 4:00pm to 5:30pm, Casa del Prado, rm. 207,
Balboa Park . Placement is by audition and invitation.

Symphony
Orchestra Jeff Edmons, Artistic Director:
An
advanced training orchestra for exceptional musicians. The
orchestra is open to string, wind, brass, and percussion
musicians aged 13-25 or who have reached the eighth grade.
Musicians accepted to this ensemble will study and perform
symphonic repertoire at the highest level. The Orchestra
performs regular concerts as well benefit concerts for the
community. The Symphony Orchestra rehearses on Saturdays
from 12:30pm to 3:45pm, Casa del Prado, rm. 207, Balboa
Park . Placement is by audition.
SHOWCASE
ENSEMBLES

Sinfonia
Jeff Edmons, Artistic Director:
A
high level symphony orchestra providing training for advanced
string, wind, brass, and percussion musicians aged 11-21
or who have reached the sixth grade. The orchestra performs
regular concerts with other Ovation and Showcase ensembles.
The Symphonic Orchestra rehearses on Saturdays from 8:30am
to 10:45am, Casa del Prado, rm. 207, Balboa Park . Placement
is by audition.

Wind
Symphony Dr. Ella Steinberg, Wind Conductor:
Provides
educational and performance opportunities for intermediate
and advanced wind, brass and percussion musicians aged 11-21
or who have reached the sixth grade . This ensemble will
study advanced wind symphony repertoire and focuses on areas
of technique, musicality, balance, blend, and other advanced
areas of development. The Wind Symphony rehearses on Saturdays
from 12:45pm to 3:00pm. at the Musician's Union . Placement
is by audition.

Concert
Winds Dr.
Ella Steinberg,
Wind Conductor:
Teaches
beginning and intermediate music skills to wind, brass,
and percussion musicians covering areas of articulation,
intonation, rhythm, tone production, and dynamics. Students
should have at least one or two years of school band experience
or private instruction. The Concert Winds rehearse on Saturdays
from 10:30am to 12:30pm. at the Musician's Union . Placement
is by audition.

Concert
Orchestra John Ramirez , Conductor:
Designed
to provide a high quality initial orchestra experience for
young and developing string, wind, brass and percussion
players. In addition to developing skills in blend and balance,
all students focus on the areas of fundamental right and
left-hand skill development, vibrato, articulation, intonation,
rhythm, tone production, embouchure,
range and dynamics as appropriate to their individual
instrument. Percussion will be
challenged with various instruments. The Concert
Orchestra rehearses on Saturdays from 3:30pm to 5:30p.m.
at the Musician's Union . Placement is by audition.

Debut
Strings John Ramirez , Conductor:
Provides
an opportunity for beginning level string players to engage
in the San Diego Youth Symphony experience. The ensemble
focuses on teaching beginning level skills such as fingering,
tone quality, pitch identification and sight-reading to
first and second year string students. The goal of this
ensemble is to let beginning students further their abilities
in an orchestral setting. The Debut Strings rehearse on
Saturdays from 1:15p.m. to 2:45p.m., Casa del Prado, rm.
204, Balboa Park . Placement is by audition.

throughout the year.
