SDYS wins Grand Prize Leadership Award!

Today in Chicago, the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS),  was named Grand Prize Winner of BoardSource's Prudential Leadership Awards for Exceptional Nonprofit Boards. SDYS Board Chair Robert Gaan and Ann Hix, Chair of the Board's Community Relations Committee, attended BoardSource's annual conference to complete the final round of the national competition, a question and answer session before a team of judges. The winners were announced at the conference plenary session.

BoardSource is a national association whose mission is to improve non-profit board governance by providing guidance and resources to the one million nonprofits in the United States. This competition, supported by Prudential, awards $45,000 in prizes to boards that exemplify exceptional governance and demonstrate their ability to drive positive change in the areas of structure, fundraising, or governance.  As Grand Prize Winner SDYS was awarded $25,000.

In April, BoardSource and Prudential invited nonprofit organizations to submit a narrative and video addressing their board-driven achievement and the lessons the board and staff members learned through the process of implementing change. The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory is the 6th oldest continuously operating youth symphony in the United States, and serves over 700 students annually in nine ensembles from its home in Balboa Park. Skill levels range from beginner to pre-professional, with participating students ages 8 to 25. In addition to its large ensemble programs, its Community Opus Project provides free after-school music instruction at elementary schools in Chula Vista and Southeast San Diego.
